LSU Football and Investing

This is money talks with Chad Olivier. Sponsored by Olivier Group.

Hi. This is Chad Olivier, CEO and certified financial planner with Olivier Group. There are a few traditions quite like a Saturday night in Baton Rouge watching the Tigas play football. Tiger Stadium, the band, the crowd, the excitement, it’s a tradition that means a great deal to this community.

And LSU football is more than just a game. A successful football program can create excitement around the university and bring tremendous attention to the entire athletic program. But at the end of the day, LSU football has a very simple job. They have to beat the competition and win.

The weather might not be perfect. The starting quarterback might get hurt. They might be playing on the road. The opponent might be better than expected.

None of that changes the objective. They have to prepare, have a plan, adjust when circumstances change, take care of their team, and find a way to win.

I often explain investing in individual companies in much the same way. When you buy a stock, you’re buying ownership in a business, and that business has competitors. Its job is to produce a good product or service, take care of its employees and customers, compete effectively, and make money, and ultimately increase the value of the company. The environment around that company is always gonna change. We may have a new president, control of congress may change from one party to another, interest rates may rise or fall, regulations may change, and the economy may speed or slow down. But just like LSU football, the company’s fundamental job doesn’t change. It still has to execute, it still has to compete, and it still has to win.

The best companies don’t sit around waiting for perfect conditions, they adapt. If their costs go up, they find efficiencies. If competitors develop a better product, they innovate. If consumer habits change, they adjust their strategy.

That is one of the reasons I remind investors not to make long term investment decisions based solely on the latest headline. Instead, ask yourself, do I own good companies, are they well managed, do they have a plan, and can they continue competing in winning over the long term? Because just like football, you’re never going to have perfect conditions. You need preparation, you need discipline, and you need a good game plan. And most importantly, you need to execute.
