Hi. I’m Chad Olivier, CEO and certified financial planner with Olivier Group. Let’s start with a simple question. What is a stock and why should it be in your portfolio?

Warren Buffett once said, if you aren’t willing to own a stock for ten years, don’t even think about owning it for ten minutes. And that really gets to the heart of what a stock is. When you buy a stock, you’re not just buying a ticker symbol. You’re buying a piece of a real business.

A business that is focused on growing, gaining market share, becoming more valuable, taking care of its people, and hopefully having everyone grow together. Now, yes, that may sound a little idealistic, but honestly, that’s how we think about our own company, Olivier Group. Nevertheless, here’s the reality. There’s no such thing as standing still in business.

In order for a company to stay viable, it has to keep growing. And if you’re not growing and gaining market share, you’re falling behind, and eventually, you’re dying as a company. So when you invest in a stock or any business, you should be looking for the growth of that business over time. If the wrong management is in place or if growth is no longer the top priority, another company will come along, take market share, and put that business at risk.

That’s why selection and ongoing selection and monitoring are so important when investing in stocks. Stocks can be powerful long term investments, but only if you’re thoughtful about what you own and why you own it.
